February 25th 2009: Sugarless Wednesday in New York State
Studies have found that an increase in sweetened food and beverage consumption is associated with increased weight gain and obesity. It is also linked to higher rates of many preventable illnesses including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, acute asthma events and hypertension. Reducing consumption of sweetened foods and beverages has been shown to improve oral health and overall body health.
March 9th 2009: Healthy Steps Kick Off Expo
School Without Walls Foundation Academy
111 N Clinton Avenue, Rochester, NY 14604
9am
To kick off the Healthy Steps Challenge in Rochester, participating schools are coordinating activities throughout the day. Students will compete in jump rope and basketball competitions, participate in fitness station workouts and obstacle courses. One of the larger events will take place at School Without Walls Foundation Academy, 111 North Clinton Ave. Team Captains have designed the “Step Challenge Without Walls” for 80 7th graders. The students have compiled background information pamphlets about childhood obesity that they will hand out to students and community members in order to create awareness. Students will start the day at 9am with a rally where they will receive information on childhood obesity and t-shirts designed by classmates. The “Step Challenge Without Walls” contines with the students leaveing the school to walk the neighborhoods, passing out literature and logging steps.
